Q: I’m a new mama: “Can I drink GUT GUT beverages while pregnant?”

A: To each their own! Every single pregnancy is different and we honestly can not tell you what is right for your own body. It is best to consult with your primary doctor to see what is best for your body and your growing baby prior to consuming our beverages.

Q: Can I drink Kombucha and KEFIZZ while breastfeeding?”

A: Once again, we recommend discussing this with your primary doctor. Some mama’s love drinking probiotic beverages to gain beneficial bacteria in their and their babies bodies and some want to wait until their babies are done breastfeeding.

Guide to deciding if GUT GUT beverages are right for you and your baby:

  1. Raw: Our Kombucha and KEFIZZ are unpasteurised and RAW. What that means is that we leave all the bacteria in our drinks (that is what makes them beneficial).

    (Most products we get at the super market are pasteurised which means the producer kills off the bacteria. Whilst this is great for certain foods, for fermentation, it means that we aren’t getting any of the health benefits from eating or drinking these fermented goods. In some cases, consuming raw and unpasteurised goods may have risks for vulnerable people such as children, elderly, pregnant or breastfeeding moms).

    With that said, GUT GUT Kombucha and KEFIZZ are different! In comparison to many unpasteurised foods, our Kombucha and KEFIZZ are highly acidic unlike their other raw friends such as unpasteurised milk and cheese. The acidity prevents the growth of harmful pathogens such as (listeria, salmonella, and E.Coli) because these organisms cannot live in the acidic environment. Yes, our Kombucha and KEFIZZ are raw and they are not pasteurised, but they do not have the same risks as their other unpasteurised friends. Fun Fact! The acidity in the drinks continue to ward off harmful pathogens also once the bottle has been opened and the drink has been exposed to air.

  2. Alcohol: All GUT GUT products contain trace amounts of alcohol because alcohol production is a byproduct of the natural fermentation process. As the yeast from the bacteria consume the sugar, they produce alcohol and carbon dioxide. The bacteria from the culture then consume the alcohol and produce healthy acids. As the yeast and bacteria work in symbiosis, the yeast continues to produce ethanol and the bacteria continues to convert that ethanol into acid!

    Women who choose to avoid alcohol completely during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding may want to avoid our GUT GUT beverages (and other raw fermented goods) as well. However, many breastfeeding moms do drink our GUT GUT beverages because they like the taste and like the way they feel from drinking them (..to each their own!)

  3. Probiotics: Pregnant and breastfeeding moms typically like to include probiotics in their day-to-day. GUT GUT beverages can be a tasty way to get naturally-occurring probiotics from a thirst-quenching beverage. Many mama’s find that regularly consuming foods with probiotics (like yogurt, kefir, miso, kimchi, and kombucha) helps with digestive issues that can occur in the body while it’s experiencing hormonal changes. Note: we do not claim that our GUT GUT beverages can heal, treat, or prevent digestive issues, we merely strive to support the ongoing research and most importantly take into account how our consumers feel when drinking our beverages!

  4. Caffeine: Our KEFIZZ is completely caffeine free while our Kombucha does contain mild amounts of Green Tea Caffeine. Fun Fact: much of the caffeine dissipates from the fermentation process. Generally speaking, Kombucha is very low in caffeine.
